Mission
Anhad is a Sikh student-run print and multimedia magazine that seeks to create spiritual, political, and historical journalism. we seek to inspire a new wave of Sikh literacy, love, and connectedness in our sangat with our Guru. Anhad hopes to rekindle a literary renaissance and repropagate Gurmukhi throughout Punjab and its diaspora.
Although Sikhs can be found in almost every corner of the globe, it is evident today that our collective Sikh literacy has begun to disappear, especially in the diaspora. Our forefathers and ancestors fought diligently and sacrificed themselves for us to be able to practice Sikhi today; yet it would be far from the truth to say we are honoring their sacrifices to the extent we should be. Furthermore, as we have migrated from one country to the next, Sikhs have often grappled with assimilative pressures and immigrant struggles, resulting in a generation that has grown up physically removed from Punjab and spiritually distant from Sikhi.
Today, many Sikhs across the globe face pivotal questions about their identity and their religion, which are especially hard to navigate in a world where Sikhs have been perpetually targeted by violence. With the systemic destruction of Sikh artifacts and landmarks by oppressive groups and leaders, there has almost never been a time in which Sikh heritage has not been under attack. Thus, the task of preserving Sikh history and culture lies with us, and only us. As our Gurus taught us to stand up fearlessly in the face of tyranny and fight for spiritual and temporal liberation, such is the mission and purpose of Anhad.
“Anhad” is the name for the never-ending sound of spiritual bliss, not produced by striking two objects. This is the ultimate sound of the cosmos and human consciousness, transcending space and time, – a sound that has no beginning or end. This sound originates from the Divine and is said to be heard upon reaching the dasam duar, or the gate of the Creator.
This is the essence of the divine experience we hope to spark in our readers.
